Abstract

This new edition of Cicero’s dialogue De natura deorum is based on a critical examination of the history of the transmission of the text and on a new survey of the manuscripts, the main results of which are as follows: the evidence of the Carolingian manuscripts has as its authority Cicero’s readers of the third and fourth centuries, Minucius Felix and Lactantius, and destroys the foundations on which the “restoration” undertaken by the Florentine humanists for the order of the Stoic exposition rests. For the first time since the Venice edition of 1507, therefore, we will be reading the text as it has been handed down and read for almost fifteen centuries: it is a text “in progress”, with a first version being modified and a second version being grafted onto it.
